Hurt from the Church

Writer: strengthintheunquastrengthintheunqua

I heard this song today [click on the picture below] and it honestly struck really close to my heart. It’s not a Christian song, but as you listen to it, it’s the reality of millions of people. They put on their church clothes and smile and fake that everything is perfect when in reality their spouse slept on the couch the night before or they partied a little to much this weekend or that they gave in to that temptation again. They go to church to smile and do what is expected to just go home and fall apart.

This isn’t what the church was meant to be. It wasn’t meant to be a place where you come in and smile to leave just as broken as you when you came in. You’re supposed to bring your brokenness in and lay it on the table. The church is meant to encourage and build up the body of Christ but so often we’re  to concerned with how we look and what the outside says that we ignore the brokenness so we don’t look “weak”.

If we came in wearing what we were, we’d have ugly dirty stained tattered clothes. We ALL have the ugliness but so many times we hide it. I am guilty of this. Whether it’s something small with school or the mistakes that haunt me, I hide it all wrap it up in a pretty package and smile my way through the weekly routine.

But let’s imagine for a minute if every person came into church with their brokenness ready to be healed. Imagine the restoration in marriages, the forgiveness among believers, the love for the world, and the revival that would occur. We’re so quick to hide our “stuff” when Colossians 3:9-10 says:

“Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”

We are not to lie to one another because that’s not who we are! We are renewed! Hello, that should excite you!

Well then there is the age old excuse “what If they judge me”  well Matthew 7:1-2 has the answer

“"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you.”

Jesus is the ultimate judge and he says if you judge others he will judge you in the same way. So yes, there are people who will judge you BUT not every person will and God will deal with those who do. God didn’t say tell every person every secret no he says in James 5:16:

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

Confess your sin to one or two trustworthy people. Tell them the hurt and the struggles that you’re going through because they can help bear your burdens (Galatians 6:2).

So tomorrow morning instead of going in church covering who you truly are, go into church with all the ugly, all the bad, and all the hurt. Find someone and be honest. It will hurt and it will be hard but it’s freeing and worth it. Don’t hide anymore because that’s what got you in this mess.
